With all the channels frozen rock solid it was time to put on my skates and go for it. After 15 years I skated around the city center of Groningen. Something that doesn’t happen too often.

Most of the lakes near Groningen have frozen shut. Which means you can go and skate on them. And since I regretted not doing so last year it was time to give it a try. Some warm clothing, a Heidi Liebt hat, skates and a big smile made me go!

Superman

Groningen - In the mean time the first month of 2012 is already behind us and therefore it is time to get back to training. One of the core issues in doing so are the core stability training sets. Nothing wrong with that, you might think, but I think differently about that after putting in this first set of the season.

This morning I got up early. Feeling great. Even before the alarm went. All to put in the first strength training of this year. Slowly I walked to the kitchen… Thinking of which sets I would do. Hamstrings first? Or perhaps some back exercise? Turned on the heating. Made me some coffee and I was ready to go! Excited to get this workout in, ‘Superman here I am!’

RunningCoffee - Op naar 2012

This post is mainly for those from Groningen and surroundings. And therefore I post this in Dutch.

—————

Ironman Wales 2011 - It is official

Groningen - I must admit that I am not to great with appointments. And not to great is perhaps an understatement! Perhaps it would be best for me to get a calender to keep my calender’s appointments in… Just to make sure all my appointments are met. Double check! But that might not even be enough… So perhaps a calender, to keeps my calender’s calender’s appoints would be the solution for me. Just triple checking everything. Of course this is not something that came like ‘thunder in a clear blue sky’ as we say in the Netherlands… What happened?

Ironman Wales 2011 - Rainetic

Groningen -  Wales is coming closer and closer. And that means tapering. And I have been looking forward to that. Not only because training was hard, but also because of Mother Nature. Unfortunately I am not blessed with super natural powers, or not as far as I know. Perhaps I have some powers, but not the ones I would like to have…

Ironman Wales 2011 - Gathering courage

Groningen - Sometimes there are sets on the plan that just make me scared… Sets like last Friday. Two sets of 120 minutes on race pace, and in between 10 minutes to recover and get a refill. I must admit that 2*120 minutes comes down to 4 hours, which is not even the total of what I would do on race day. Nonetheless, it got me scared on both Wednesday and Thursday. But I made it and here is the story.

In a short two weeks Ironman Wales is coming up. And for that a lot of training needs to be done. Last Wednesday the Orbea was my partner in crime for a short 7 hour ride…

Hot tub versus ice bath

Groningen -There is only one 50 meter pool in Groningen. An old one. No roof, no blanket covering the water at night, no funky drainage system at the side, just a plain old concrete basis. And although it is pretty nice to got to, I have a love/hate relationship with it. And I am not talking about my splits, the showers, the entry fee, the ride there, the people working there, but I am talking about the water!
