Final video before racing tomorrow. A snapshot of transit where everybody is getting ready for the big day tomorrow.

Ironman Wales 2011 - Race the dragon

Tenby (United Kingdom, Wales) - There are 12 hours left before I get up tomorrow morning. And I am ready! Ready to face, race and fight the Welsh Dragon. The bike is in transit, the bags are in place. The body is filled with energy. And the mind is set. What remains is counting down the hours. The worst hours of them all. Waiting for all that lies ahead of us. Waiting for the unknown… Waiting for what the Dragon will throw at us…

Ironman Wales 2011 - Swim warm up

Watchfield (United Kingdom) - Stage 2 is done. It was a long day in the car, but at least we got to do some sightseeing along the way. Lots and lots of trucks. The Netherlands, Belgium, France and England. And of course I won’t forget the left hand  driving. All added to the experience we had today… Perhaps not as much as the EuroTunnel/channel swim decision….

Ironman Wales 2011 - It is official

Groningen - I must admit that I am not to great with appointments. And not to great is perhaps an understatement! Perhaps it would be best for me to get a calender to keep my calender’s appointments in… Just to make sure all my appointments are met. Double check! But that might not even be enough… So perhaps a calender, to keeps my calender’s calender’s appoints would be the solution for me. Just triple checking everything. Of course this is not something that came like ‘thunder in a clear blue sky’ as we say in the Netherlands… What happened?

Ironman Wales 2011 - Rainetic

Groningen -  Wales is coming closer and closer. And that means tapering. And I have been looking forward to that. Not only because training was hard, but also because of Mother Nature. Unfortunately I am not blessed with super natural powers, or not as far as I know. Perhaps I have some powers, but not the ones I would like to have…

Ironman Wales 2011 - Gathering courage

Groningen - Sometimes there are sets on the plan that just make me scared… Sets like last Friday. Two sets of 120 minutes on race pace, and in between 10 minutes to recover and get a refill. I must admit that 2*120 minutes comes down to 4 hours, which is not even the total of what I would do on race day. Nonetheless, it got me scared on both Wednesday and Thursday. But I made it and here is the story.

Ironman Wales 2011 - Change of plan

Ronse (Belgium) - There are days, and there are days, and there are two of these days in a row… Days on which everything turns into a challenge. Challenges you don’t want to have on that day, or actually not at all. And two of those days in a row is just too much to handle. I am broken. My legs hurt, my head feels like it is going to explode, my forehead feels stuffed with something that is common in winter, and las but least there is a little mental setback.

A lot can happen in two days as I found out. It all looked promising! Two days in Belgium to get some hills in on both the bike and run. An early morning swim was planned and at 10:00 I was in the car heading to Ronse. Easy to find! First exit after Gent and follow the signs… Google maps told me it was roughly a 4 hour ride and without traffice and my phone showing me the way that was a piece of cookie?! Wrong!

In a short two weeks Ironman Wales is coming up. And for that a lot of training needs to be done. Last Wednesday the Orbea was my partner in crime for a short 7 hour ride…

The story behind the catalog picture

Groningen - Behind every picture there are stories. So when I saw the picture in the Timex Catalog yesterday, on of the story came back to me. The shot is from Ironman Arizona last year, but I have never see anybody taking it… It must have been somewhere in the last 175km of the bike leg, since I had a flat in the first 5km. And that is what you see on my back and under my seat. My spare inner tube is hanging from my race suit and my little bag for the extra tubes and CO2 cartridges is tangling under my seat.
