The story behind the catalog picture

Groningen - Behind every picture there are stories. So when I saw the picture in the Timex Catalog yesterday, on of the story came back to me. The shot is from Ironman Arizona last year, but I have never see anybody taking it… It must have been somewhere in the last 175km of the bike leg, since I had a flat in the first 5km. And that is what you see on my back and under my seat. My spare inner tube is hanging from my race suit and my little bag for the extra tubes and CO2 cartridges is tangling under my seat.

Timex Multisport team camp summary!

New York City Timex team camp 2011!

Hanging out in Bryant Parc with a couple of great friends!!

The moment my little world stood still

Again, I am somewhere high above the Atlantic ocean. Cruising along with almost 800km/h, having travelled almost 1700km. My laptop is plugged in the power below my seat, my phone is charging and so is my Ipod! Comfortably flying to the States! This time however the flight is directly to my final destination: New York City! No more other flight to destinations across the states and New York is getting closer. And at the same time it is  yet so far away…

My traveling started at 7AM instead of 6:30. My phone crashed somewhere at night and that prevented my alarm from waking me. But since this was going to be an exciting day I woke up early enough to get ready to get picked up! So at 7:40AM I was in the car, with all my things, or at least I hope so, and ready to head to Schiphol Airport. Finally the day had come! The day to fly to NYC and meet the team again. It has been too long!

Although it was pretty crowded  on the road things went pretty smooth. Within 2 hours we were getting close to the airport. I had been twittering and using facebook a lot in the car, but did not have any phone calls, till we almost drove into the Schiphol tunnel. I picked up my phone and it was the doctor. My heart just stopped…

“This is my Kona”, aldus de opgetogen winnares.

Back home

Tucson – I am still alive, but I could have been dead today. Our weekly run of 2 hours went through Cactus Forest again as like last week. This week I did not run with Ben, but with Michael Gordon (also a PRO triathlete). We took it easy on the run because of our little cycle trip yesterday. Easy and steady we did ran to the end of the park and ran some more on the road and after an hour we did a U-turn to head back the same road. Nothing bad, but at 1:45 Michael just stopped in the middle of the dirt track we were following. I almost bumped into him and wanted to pass him, but at that moment he put his left arm out to keep me from passing. “Stop!!!” Then I saw something lying in the middle of the path, coiling up a bit. A rattle and a his came straight from the rattle snake lying there in the sun and heating up. IT SCARED THE CRAP OUT OF ME! If Michael would not have put his arm out I would have tripped or at least stepped on the snake! It was really nice to see the snake, but it felt so strange to see it lying on the path and knowing that I could have been bitten if I had continued… Anyways our run was good and more easy as last time, the legs were still done for the day!

Sun and snow in AriZONa.

Tucson - Well, uhmm… I actually would not know where to start my story of today…. I survived my cultural shock and I am getting used to having a bowl of cereal in the morning. It is 6 AM at the moment and I just woke up after a nice nap of 9 hours. A cup of coffee is next to me on the table, Syd the cat is trying to get some attention from me and I can see the sunrise through the window of the living room. It will another fine day today to go out and train up in the mountains surrounding Tucson. But first I want this article to be finished and tell you all about the last couple of days!

Florida: Part Trois

Panama City Beach (FL) - It is all done, there is nothing more that can be done. It has been hard and fun at the same time and now there is only one thing that an athlete should be doing: trusting his own body. All the training, all the sacrifices made, all the; “I have to get to bed early”, all the; “no sorry no beer for me, give me an apple juice please” and lots more of these kind of “excuses”. All had one purpose, the race. It is not only a big day for me, but for about 2000 others too. Some will  just try to finish, others are trying to qualify for Hawaii (that is why I use the double ii in the title). Thef tents of the Ironman park are set up near the finish line, there is an increasing number of “dolphins” in the sea and the road is crowded with cyclist for all over the globe. I have been here for just over 2 weeks now and I have seen the road along the coast to many times. I am set for Saturday! It is going to be fun, hard, fast, great, big, warm, cold, painful and a race with a body I trust!

Florida: part 1.b

Panama City Beach - It look bad, very bad, really really bad outside. The sun is gone, hopefully it will stop raining tomorrow. But besides that, all is well and my English writing has improved to the level of a five year old. I did some more training the last couple of days and I got used to the timeline I life in at the moment. So what else is there to tell. Enough! i do not even know where to start telling. I will just start how every fairytale starts: “Long, long ago, there was….” Just kidding, I will just tell some off my adventures.

Florida: part 1.a

Panama City Beach (Florida, United States) - I said to myself this morning: “Jerzy! You are racing international now so you really need to write more often in English on your website! But, but, but, I cannot, I cannot write that good in English. I can make myself clear, but I guess the feeling I have is just not in my post! Come on sissy, you will not improve that if you keep writing in Dutch, so stop crying!” So, this is again a post in English and I will try to keep it that way. At the moment I am all on my own here in Florida and that means that I have to talk English all day. It is not so hard, but if someone says: “You talk funny!” you get (see a word I did not know) unsure if you are talking wright….. But then again, how many languages does she speak?
